A long time reader and now friend of ours, Ben Peoples has put together a survey on Google Spreadsheets about using DMX 5-wire and DMX over ethernet in the rental market.
I’m trying to establish a baseline for how much people are using DMX-over-ethernet versus DMX over DMX wire in rental environments. From my perspective, given a four-wall rental space with some minimal accommodations (disconnects, some in-conduit wiring), how much are you expecting or planning to use DMX versus ethernet.
When you have a moment, visit the Google Spreadsheet page to take the survey.
Thanks @bpeoples!

It depends on the money available. High end products, specifically consoles, tend to use only ethernet. A great example is the Eos. The Eos only has ethernet ports. You have to go into network node to breakout to the the DMX.
However the Ion has dmx ports built in. It’s a lower end product with a lower end market.
The industry is swiftly moving towards ethernet. It’s cheaper, and the information that can be sent using it is far greater.
So my answer is that there is no expectation involved. I am going to spec and use whatever the space can afford or is provided. Smaller houses are reluctant to switch to DMX as it requires new hardware as well as cable.
I don’t think that anyone can expect anything. You use the tool that is best for the job.
