Xtreme Structures Introduces iTruss iPhone App

Xtreme Structures just announced the release of their latest “product”, the iTruss iPhone App. I have to say, I am quite disappointed in this app right off the get go. It was a $4.99 app through the iTunes app store. Of course I bought it, I wanted to check it out for you.

Let me start with I have never heard of Xtreme Structures or their line of truss. Not a huge deal breaker, but none the less, an unknown one to me. After reading the description of the app in iTunes, I expected it to be similar to the iRigging app from JR Clancy. Meaning that a professional company put together a calculator form general specifications and would be universal measurements across all types of truss.

Do not, I repeat, do not make the same mistake I did with iTruss. The iPhone app is at best a “catalog” for Xtreme Structures trussing product line. Yes, it does offer the ability to do some calculations to find the best truss from Xtreme Structures, but there is no cross reference guide or anything for other truss manufacturers. I would not be so upset about Xtreme Structures leaving the other manufactures out of the app is the app was free or even .99. But come on 4.99 for the app that only deals with just their product line?

All that being said, I think the app is very nicely laid out and applaud Xtreme Structures work on the app, it looks and functions very nicely. I have hopes of Xtreme Structures updating the app with new features and other manufacturers, but time will tell.

You can download the iTruss iPhone app from the iTunes app store, but again, it is a $4.99 download. You can learn more about the iTruss App by visiting the apps web site at www.itrussapp.com.

New Lighting iPhone App – iSquint

iSquint App LineupDo you like your iPhone/iPod Touch?  Do you like to read iSquint?  Well, to take a line from Apple’s marketing department, There’s an app for that, and it’s called the iSquint App.  Think of the iSquint app as a portal into all the different types of content that iSquint produces.  Want to read the latest headlines, easy, click on the home screen of the app and there are the latest articles for you to read at your leisure.  You can also listen to the iSquint Podcast and view video’s from the iSquint YouTube Channel all from right within the iSquint app. You can even view an up-to-date listing of the iSquint twitter feed.

You get all of this for nothing, zilch, nada or otherwise… FREE.  I don’t feel that you should have to pay to read something that you can read for free on the internet.  So why even offer an iPhone app when you can read iSquint on your iPhone through Safari?  During the redesign of iSquint, it was important to me to make the site readable across ALL platforms, including the iPhone and it was successful. But how to make it even easier to read iSquint on the iPhone was the next challenge… an iPhone app! The iSquint App makes it even easier and quicker to read the latest news, podcast, video’s and twitter updates from iSquint in one easy to read app.

Head over to the iTunes App Store on your computer, iPhone, iPod Touch and soon, the iPad to download your FREE copy of the iSquint App. Droid and Blackberry users… I have not forgotten about you… stay tuned ;)

New iPhone App: DMX Color Mixer

DMX Color Mixer iPhone AppI just heard about a new iPhone app that was released from 40oz Apps, DMX Color Mixer. You might know one of their other iPhone apps for lighting, DMX to Dip. 40oz Apps create simple and easy to use iPhone apps not only for lighting people, but also a couple BAC calculators for those who have party a little to hard.

DMX Color Mixer is exactly as the name suggest, a color mixer that is able to produce the intensity level or DMX levels of an RGB color.  Pretty simple right?  Here is more from 40oz Apps.

This super simple app is a reference for setting color values in DMX setup.  Simply move one of the three faders to see how it affects the color at the top.  You also can scroll through presets to see what values are used for common colors. [white, black, purple, magenta, blue, aqua, green, yellow, orange, red, amber].  The “DMX”toggles between DMX values (0-255) and percentage values, (0-100).  The reset button resets all values to zero.

Nice little app for what it does.  It really has a nice look to it and gives the feeling of a console.  What I would like to see is give me another option to mix colors.  The faders are RGB, or Red, Green, Blue.  How about adding a toggle switch to allow us to mix in CMY mode and HSV mode?  Just a thought.

DMX Color Mixer runs .99 cents in the iTunes App Store.  For more information about the app or any of the other apps that 40oz Apps developed, visit their website at www.40ozapps.com.

Martin Introduces MAXRemote iPhone App

Martin MAXRemoteDuring LDI 2009, Martin announced that they released the MAXRemote iPhone App.  The MAXRemote is an iPhone App to remotely connect to the Martin Maxxzy and Maxxyz PC lighting consoles.

MAXRemote discovers remote lighting devices automatically and allows for manipulation of fixtures, presets, channels and more when users connect to a Maxxyz.

Multi-touch belts in the parameter view allow for manipulation of DMX values with great precision. A pan/tilt control even allows for control of a moving light’s pan and tilt via the iPhone or iPod touch’s built-in accelerometer.

Users can control color values in both CMY and RGB modes with support for Lee, Rosco and GAM filters. Users can also trigger cuelists with Go, Pause and Release commands. An offline mode allows anyone to experience MAXRemote without the need to have it connected to a Maxxyz system.

Features:

  • Automatic discovery
  • Controls Maxxyz remotely
  • Black skin for dark environments
  • Integrated help
  • Passcode protected
  • Saves show data for fast follow up synchronization
  • Controls all fixtures in a show
  • Integrated fixture search
  • Create and edit presets
  • Pan/Tilt view with built-in accelerometer support under sensor mode
  • Color picker with support for Lee, Rosco and GAM filters
  • Easy manipulation of all DMX channels
  • Fast menu appears when shaking device (clears values quickly)

  • Start, pause and release cuelists, chases, etc.
  • Exclusively for iPhone and iPod touch

The Martin MAXRemote requires a Maxxyz controller, but Martin has included a demo show file with the download to test out the MAXRemote to see how the app works.  There was a some concerns brought up right after the release of the MAXRemote that parts of the app were a little to similar to Synthe FX Luminaire iPhone App.  From what I understand, Martin and Synthe FX are talking and working out the issues.

MAXRemote is a free download from the iTunes App Store.

Dmx to Dip iPhone App

dmx_to_dip_appWhen it comes to DMX and dip switch calculators, the iPhone app market is over flowing. Well, we are adding another drop to the bucket in hopes that it the bucket doesn’t tip over. Back at the beginning of August, 40oz Apps, the developers of the BAC Monitor app, released another app to their line up called DMX to DIP.

From the name you can pretty clearly tell what the app does. Just like all the others out their you can enter in a DMX address and get the dip switch position for fixtures that still use dip switches for addressing. You can also do the reverse, turn on and off dip switches and the app will let you know what the address is.

Now, what is so different about this app?  Nothing, other then the wonderful display and design of the app.  This app really makes us want to touch and play with the app. Plus, the app does exactly what it says with it’s simple, easy and clean design.  It might just be worth the .99 cents from the iTunes App Store.
