Coemar Introduces New LED Profile Fixturea – Reflection LEDko

Last week at Prolight + Sound in Frankfurt Germany, Coemar added three new LED fixtures to their Reflection lineup of fixtures.  All of the three new fixtures fall into under the name LEDko.  Nice use of word play if you ask me, mixing leko and LED.

The three new fixtures are the Reflection Ledko FullSpectrum, Reflection Ledko VariWhite and the Reflection Ledko White. Each of the fixture include “multi-LED” light source at 120w for producing uniform beams of light with no pixels or dots, patent pending. The life span of the LED’s are expected to last 50,000 hours at 70% lumen intensity maintenance.

Barbizon Lighting Debuts the World’s Brightest Broadcast/Film LED Fixture

Barbizon Lighting today revealed the intent to develop, manufacture, and distribute a new line of LED based
lighting fixtures called the Eta Carina line for the film video market segment. Barbizon’s plan is to reveal the fixture at this year’s NAB show April 11-14. Quietly over the last year Barbizon Lighting has recruited a team to build, hands-down, the most efficient, brightest flexible LED luminaire for use in film and video production.

The team includes:

  • Nano-technologists with deep understanding of solid-state lighting who are using nano structures to create white light LED arrays with a CRI of 95+.
  • Optical engineers who have developed high gain lenses utilizing Wavefront-guided LASIK technology to multiply the focusing power of the LED’s lensing system, by optimizing lenses with a spatially varying correction, guiding the computer-controlled excimer laser with measurements from a wavefront sensor. Based on their results, the team has successfully used WFG-Lasik to amplify the LED output exponentially.
  • A thermal dissipation team who’s sole goal was to keep the system cool and without divulging too much of the patent-pending system, have miniaturized a cooling technology originally developed by Cray Computers that uses a ‘plasma’ to cool components. The new system uses Moore’s Law and nano-tubes specifically knit to dissipate heat from the circuit.
  • Lastly an industrial design group with talent culled from industrial packaging to the auto and aerospace industry to develop a housing that can be used indoors or out that is easy to set-up and focus.

“We took almost a year to get it just right and ready for the industry. It’s also been so hard to not tell anyone what we’ve been up to.” says Tobin Neis, Marketing director for Barbizon. “The reigning “brightest star” in our galaxy is the Eta Carina, with a whopping solar wattage of 4.7 million suns. This is how our new fixture stacks up to the next closest competitor.”

Barbizon’s President Jonathan Resnick told us, “Look, we used our market position and customer base in television and film to determine where the white space was for this fixture. We also could see first hand where our now competitors fall short and where we could improve on their mistakes. There’s no doubt about it, this fixture is going to change this industry – everyone else will now be in our shadow.”

Happy April Fool’s Day

Robe to Launch Five New Products at Prolight + Sound 2011

ROBIN MMX Spot
This new fixture is the new generation of 1200W Spot fixtures and the first in a new series of Robe moving lights designed to be energy efficient and smaller in keeping with the ROBIN (Robe Innovative Technology). The MMX Spot is compact, lightweight and has a small base and expediently sized, and is expected to be a major hit with rental companies and installations alike.

Using the innovative Phillips MSR Platinum 35 lamp, and combined with a sophisticated optical system, the MMX Spot is a true equivalent of any 1200W Spotlight moving head on the market today. In some features, the MMX is as bright as a 1500W spotlight and at the same time energy saving – consuming about 30% less power than the current 1200W products.

ROBIN 300 LEDWash
Following the ROBIN 600 LEDWash, Robe’s fastest ever selling product, comes the 300 version which is even smaller and neater in construction, with all the features of the 600 at a highly competitive price.

This will be ideal for small installations and places where space is at a premium. There is the option to simulate tungsten lamp behavior when dimming and switching off, complete with ‘red effect’ and thermal delay. Made with the same Cree 10W multichip RGBW LEDs as the 600 LEDWash, it has all the fabulous colour mixing and homogenisation qualities of the 600, plus true whites with a selection of pre-programmed color temperatures   (2700, 3200, 4200, 5600 & 8000K).

CityFlex 48
A completely user configurable LED ‘batten’ consisting of 4 modules using the latest Cree 10W RGBW multichip LEDs. These customizable units have a strong and uniform light output and are suitable for any application. The unique design (patent pending) allows multiple lighting formats from one fixture – be it a compact floodlight format, traditional linear LED format or a variety of different angled options. The fixture´s incredible flexibility means previously unobtainable effects are now available ….. from a single unit.

Housed in a durable aluminum IP 65 rated casing, the CityFlex48 has excellent color mixing from a single-point-of-source with a definable pixel pitch.  A universal mounting system gives multiple rigging options for floor, wall or on to trussing. A separate quiet convection cooled control unit running via DMX or RDM allows easy setup via control display screens, while DMX and power lines can be daisy chained via Powercon connectors.

ROBIN 600 PureWhite
Following huge demand for high quality moving LED fixtures in the wake of  its ROBIN 600 LEDWash (RGBW), Robe launches the ROBIN 600 PureWhite, a white version for applications like TV, theatres, exhibitions and conferences and anywhere needing a high quality, low powered white light with all the features and functionality of a moving light – like pan/tilt & zoom etc.

There will be 3 versions – cool white (CW) at 6000K, warm white (WW) at 3200K and Smart White (SW), which is variable from 3200 – 6500K. Used as a traditional white light source, the ROBIN 600 PureWhite has the potential to dramatically reduce heat output in studios, emitting virtually no heat due to its superior cooling management. Costs will be further slashed because less AC will be required to keep studios at a comfortable temperature for everyone working.

The ROBIN 600 PureWhite features the same 3 rings of 10W Cree multichip LEDs as its color changing counterpart, a fully homogenized light engine with no shadows or pixelation, producing a beautiful smooth quality of light throughout the full beam path. The Cree multichip combined with Robe’s lens optimization has enabled perfect whites to be produced by the ROBIN 600 PureWhite series. Ring control, and dimming and other features and effects are all the same as the LEDWash 600 RGBW, making this a massively versatile ground breaking addition to Robe’s ROBIN range.

Review: Scenex Lighting Ignition LED Base 4 Truss Toner

Scenex Lighting would like to introduce the Ignition LED Base 4.  The Base 4 is a strong contender for the ultimate truss up lighter.  Designed to fit exactly inside a 12 x 12 inch stick of box truss, the Base 4 features a square array of LED’s.  This places the 10 degree RGB LED’s in an optimal alignment to punch all the way to the top of a 10ft stick of truss with maximum color.

The demo unit we were given features 3-pin DMX in and out, an LED menu, and Neutrik PowerCon input and output. The brushed aluminum casing is solid and light weight.  The default configuration has wings on the sides to lock the Base 4 in place when used with “Chinese Style” truss.  There are other configurations available if you use Thomas/Tomcat style truss.  The PowerCon power input and output are nice to see.  This allows you to daisy chain multiple Base 4’s (or other LED units) together using a common cable type.  The Neutrik PowerCon is becoming the defacto choice among LED manufacturer’s and moving lights alike.  The only thing of slight concern is I was unable to locate an external fuse.  This is still a “Beta” unit, so hopefully we’ll see that added to the final production unit.

The menu is easy to navigate.  It features a Blue LED display and three navigation buttons beneath.  Even without consulting the manual, it was easy to select from the built in programs and set up a basic look.  You have control options for static colors, or color chasing/fading.  The unit is easy to address for DMX and features several profile modes that allow for standard RGB options or a split color mode that will allow you to tone the truss in two colors at once. It should be noted also that the Base 4’s production model will feature 5-Pin DMX as opposed to the 3-Pin DMX that our demo unit has.

That brings us to the LED array.  The Base 4 features 12 3w RGB homogenized LED emitters with 1w per color, per emitter. The LED’s are arrayed in a square around the outside of the fixture instead of a circle or hexagon as common in LED fixtures.  This places the LED’s in an optimal position to light the structure and cross members in the truss.  The 10 degree beam of the LED’s also gives the Base 4 an excellent throw distance.  It covered evenly all the way to the top of a 10ft stick of truss and would probably go to 15 to 20ft given the chance.  The field coming off the LED’s is just large enough that if you are using 18 or 20 in truss, it would most likely tone these as well.  Though you would want to add a unit facing the opposite direction at the other end of the truss to cover both ends.

In conclusion, the Base 4 LED truss toner provides lighting designers an excellent option for getting that perfect truss color. Given its design and lack of a rigging point, this is not a multitasker, but that’s not a bad thing.  You aren’t going to ask a PAR can to become a Leko, are you? Despite some minor flaws, the Base 4 is a very good truss toner/warmer and I would spec it without hesitation.  The colour rendering is excellent and not only does the Base 4 do what its designed for.  It does it well. So the question becomes, are you ready to start your “Ignition”?

GLP Announces Impression Spot One LED Profile LED Moving Light

The Impression Spot One features an RGB LED engine with 8 or 16-bit control over each color, allowing for incredibly delicate color changes or instantaneous color bumps. The spectrum it achieves has been calibrated to be as wide as possible — from soft pastel colors to deep saturated shades, and everything in between. The color field also remains even across the entire beam, no matter the size or sharpness of focus. The electronic control of the LED engine allows full and smooth dimming over the entire range along with fast, solid state intensity snaps and variable speed strobe rates of between 1 and 10 flashes per second.

It has been designed for operation in noise-sensitive environments and will be as perfectly at home on a balcony rail in a Broadway theatre as it will in a busy TV studio environment, or touring the world as part of a concert system.

To control beam size output, the Impression Spot One features a high speed, fully variable iris — with an incredibly high speed of just 0.2 seconds from fully open to closed.

Also in the optical effects section of the fixture is a variable speed and bi-directional rotating prism, giving additional effects to the output beam, whether to create additional gobo images, to add an extra dimension to effects from the graphic wheel or to expand the beam even further in its simplest form.

Being an LED based fixture GLP has been able to keep the weight and size of the fixture as low as possible. Matching the impression Meisterstuck in terms of its baseless yoke, the impression spot one weighs just 48.5 lbs. / 22 kg. For ease of use anywhere around the world, the fixture also features a fully auto sensing power supply which operates anywhere from 100-240V at 50/60 Hz.
