PRG Shows off Their Moves With the Commander

I am a lighting geek/nerd by nature, but love all technical aspects of our business.  Watching a moving light spin and whorl is one thing, but to see the truss it is attached to along with video walls move in harmony, now that is amazing stuff! I will not pretend to know the motion control side of the business, but after seeing what PRG has come up with, I defiantly want to learn.

PRG showed off their Commander motion control console off the show floor and in their meeting room at LDI.  I was floored when I saw two video screens moving across their stage in perfect unison. All the while, the video on the screens was standing still as if being projected onto the screens.  The power of genius minds is astounding!

Take a closer look at the PRG Commander, control is power!

iSquint Podcast: Episode 12 – LDI 2010 Post Show Podcast

In this, the 12th episode of the iSquint Podcast, I am joined by some heavy hitters in the industry to follow up and talk about the 2010 LDI Show in Las Vegas Nevada.  Joining me on the LDI 2010 Post Show Podcast is Mr. Michael Eddy from Eddy Marketing and Consulting, Mr. Richard Cadena, The Electron Wizard and Editor of PLSN Magazine, Mr. David Schraffenberger, General Manager of Production Advantage and finally, but certainly not least in any way, Mr. Jacob Coakley, Editor of Stage Directions Magazine.

We ditched the last hour of the show and headed over to the PRG meeting room to sit down and have an open discussion about all of the latest and greatest products that we viewed on the show floor.  We lingered on the subject of LEDs for a while.  We had to put that subject to rest as we could have been there for 3 days just talking about LEDs.  We also covered some of the new control, rigging, video and motion control products.  There was just not enough time to cover everything, but was certainly nice to get other opinions and gather together to see what each of us missed.

Couple of HUGE thanks to give out.  Of course, thank you to you gentleman for joining me on the podcast!  It is always a pleasure to be in your company.  Thank you to Production Resource Group, (PRG) for allowing us to take over a small corner of your meeting room to record the podcast. And last, thank you to The Swingin Johnson’s Band for allowing me to use part of their song, Playthang in the podcast. I love you guys!

#LDI2010: PRG Shows Off Bad Boy with CMY Mixing

A week or so before LDI, PRG announced the release of the Bad Boy moving light with CMY Mixing.  I had a chance to hang out with the crazy cats from PRG in the meeting room off the show floor to go over a couple of things.  Chris Conti, the Product Manager for the Bad Boy fixtures sat down and ran through some of the awesome features of the Bad Boy.

Thanks Chris!

#LDI2010: PRG Set to Show Off V476 and OHM LED Fixture

LDI is going to be hoping this year.  Seems like everyone is set to release, announce or preview something at the show!  PRG has a hand full of products that they will have on display at their booth this year.  Two things that I am siked to see are the V476 desk and their new OHM LED fixture.

The V476 is a smaller version of the popular V676 console, it has three on board touchscreen monitors, one external touchscreen and a Channel Select panel. The encoder and fader counts remain the same between the two models. The V676 control console, used this past year on the Vancouver Olympics, multiple television awards shows and on Broadway, will also be demonstrated.

The other thing that I am jazzed to see is the PRG OHM Light. The OHM is an LED-based, color temperature adjustable spacelight which can replace traditional spacelights on a 1-for-1 basis, drawing only 8-amps versus 42-amps for tungsten spacelights. It uses an array of 16 LED emitters featuring Gekko’s award-winning kleer colour® technology that has both optical and thermal feedback. The OHM can be controlled locally or remotely via DMX, doing away with the need for dimmers and heavy Socapex cables. The color temperature and light levels can be set—and changed—instantly at the touch of a button. The OHM provides significant savings of power, time and HVAC for any film or television production.

Of course PRG will also debuting the PRG Bad Boy CMY® automated luminaire with color crossfading technology. Allowing designers to fade between colors easily and simply while still having all the features, including the superior optics and precision movement that have made the PRG Bad Boy an industry-wide success.

Correction: PRG ADDS Bad Boy Fixture With CMY Mixing

Looks like I was a little wrong earlier today. PRG is not replacing their Bad Boy fixture that has quantum color mixing, but adding a new version of the Bad Boy with CMY mixing. Here is the clarification note I got from PRG.

The Bad Boy CMY is not a re-introduction of the Bad Boy but rather a new second model. Both the Bad Boy with the Quantum Color and the Bad Boy CMY will be available. There are two models not a replacement. Many designers like the Bad Boy with Quantum Color (known simply as the Bad Boy) , especially in the concert lighting world.  Now designers in all markets have the choice of which model Bad Boy they wish to use that best serves their design needs.

Here is a little bit more about the new Bad Boy CMY.

Debuting at PLASA on the PRG stand will be the PRG Bad Boy CMY® automated luminaire with seamless color crossfading technology. Allowing designers to fade between colors easily and simply while still having all the features, including the superior optics and precision movement, that have made the PRG Bad Boy an industry-wide success. An ideal choice whenever a big-beam look is required, for example, when playing in front of high-brightness LED screens. Producing a powerful 48,000 lumens, the Bad Boy CMY couples its high-definition optics with a Philips MSR Gold™ FastFit lamp that can be set to levels 900W, 1,200W, or 1,400W. Boasting an optical efficiency of over 40%, Bad Boy CMY doubles standard efficiencies, marrying both brightness and green product ideals without compromise.

Love the PRG V676? You’ll Love it’s Little Brother, the V476

Pick your jaw off your desk and stop drooling… Well, atleast long enough to read about it. Then commence the drooling.

PRG will be debuting the new V476® control console which provides the same powerful, flexible control of the V676® control console in a smaller size hardware package with all the same programming capacities and capabilities. It is 2/3 the size of the V676 which allows it to be used in spaces that would prove too tight for the larger console. The V476 still offers programmers extraordinary speed, both in programming and responsiveness, as well as innovative interface advancements both in hardware layout and software design. V476 has intuitive features that quickly and easily handle the ever-expanding scope of equipment to be controlled while acknowledging the ever-decreasing time to program it all. It features three onboard touch screen monitors, one external touch screen and the external Channel Select panel. The encoder and fader counts remain the same between the two models as well as all capacities and capabilities. V476 provides a sophisticated and powerful software platform that is reliable and extremely user friendly. Expanding on performance tested development of programming and playback platforms to provide state of the art in control and functionality. Using an integrated Apple® Mac Mini as the processor unit means V476 takes advantage of superb graphics, faster processing, and can be efficiently updated. The V476 is optimized for an array of work environments with backlit buttons, low profile displays and off-axis viewing. V476’s cutting-edge software, sleek hardware, new graphical user interface and host of features make it the perfect control console for both lighting and media in a compact package.

PRG to Re-Introduce Bad Boy With CMY Mixing at PLASA 2010

At the PLASA show later early next week, PRG, Production Resource Group, will be re-introducing their Bad Boy moving light with CMY mixing. If you remember correctly, the “orginial” Bad Boy used sets of color wheels to mix and combine colors.  After listening to designers and technicians, PRG has re-designed the moving light to include CMY mixing.

The Bad Boy still is capable of producing a powerful 48,000 lumens, the Bad Boy CMY couples its high-definition optics with a Philips MSR Gold FastFit lamp that can be set to levels 900W, 1,200W, or 1,400W. Boasting an optical efficiency of over 40%, Bad Boy CMY doubles standard efficiencies, marrying both brightness and green product ideals without compromise.

No additional information has been made available about the “new” Bad Boy with CMY mixing.  If you are attending the PLASA show next week in London, be sure to stop by and check out the all new PRG Bad Boy.
