The Video Equipment Rental Booth at LDI 2010

Some of the most amazing booths at LDI 2010 were the simplest ones.  Case in point, the Video Equipment Rental or VER Booth.  They didn’t have a big fancy booth with moving lights dancing all around the booth or lasers running across the entire show floor.  They had a modest 20×20 booth with dancing circles of video display.

No one was on the edge of their booth asking you to stop in and take a look.  Everyone that walked past their booth instinctively stopped and marveled at the circles dancing and running loops of right in front of us.  Take a look and see for yourself.

Halloween and LEDs, Oh My

For the past month or two, I have been hinting over on twitter that I was working on something special for Halloween this year.  Halloween has come and gone and here is what I have been working on.  With everything that has been going on lately, like this little trade show called LDI and huge amounts of work, I found time to put a little light show together lighting up my house.

I quickly ran out of time putting this together so I didn’t get to write any time code to music for the lights which still irks me a little, but over all, I am pretty happy with how it turned out.  Apparently I won best decorated house in the neighborhood… I didn’t know there was a contest!  I think it was just recognition, I wish there was some prize money!

The F100 fogger really made the house look spokie and awesome, I just wish it kept working for the video and photos.  Sorry guys.  But the best part of the night was a kid dressed in a spider man costume.  He kept getting “stuck” on the spider webs on the ground for the source 4.  I still laugh to myself when I think of that, so original!

Anyways, have a look, let me know what you think.  I included a bit about how I controlled the entire rig in the last 2 minutes for us control geek/nerds.

Altman Lighting Shows off New Spectra Strip & UV 30 Spectra LED Fixtures at LDI 2010

Altman Lighting has been a driving force in our industry for years, for like 50+ years!  They have designed and manufactures some of the most innovative products for our industry.  Just a couple short years ago, Altman leaped forward into the 21st century with LED products and haven’t looked back.

LDI 2010 brought one brand spankin new LED product and the final production version of another that some have seen before.  The first was the brand new Spectra Strip, a 600 watt LED strip light. The other is the Blacklight UV 30 Spectra LED fixture.

Take a look at the video of Walt Dowling from Altman Lighting giving a quick overview of both fixtures from the floor of LDI 2010.

Thanks Walt!

MDG Fog, theONE, Takes Best Debuting Product at LDI 2010

MDG Fog took home the Best Debuting Product Award at LDI this year with the latest product, theONE.  It’s not wonder why, this thing spits out fog or haze like no ones business!  Just take a look at the tour edition of the thing with CO2 canisters attached, it looks mean and ready to smoke you out.  In fog mode, theONE can spit out 10 hours, yes 10 HOURS of continues fog.. But it gets better, it Haze Mode, 308 HOURS all while consuming just 1415 watts of power.

There is a good reason MDG is calling this thing theONE, it’s the last one you’ll ever need!  Martin Michaud, President of MDG Fog gave me a quick run down and demo of both the touring edition of theONE and the stand alone version.  Take a look and let me know what you think.  Will this be the last one you’ll ever need?

Thanks Martin and congrats!

2010 Marks the 100th anniversary of Rosco Labs.  HAPPY ANNIVERSARY ROSCO!  Congratulations on 100 years, here is to hundreds and hundreds more!  At LDI 2010, Rosco had 100 years of history of the company on display.  WOW, there were some pretty interesting facts and old products and swatch books on display. Joel Svendsen of Rosco has a great post on the recently launched Rosco Spectrum Blog about some of the History of Rosco and were the labs part of the name came into play.

Rosco’s New York Sale Rep, Chad Tiller was kind enough to do yet another on camera appearance for me to go over some of the history of Rosco and some of the latest technology and products that Rosco is continuing to develop.  Take a look at the video and then head over to www.rosco.com to learn more. Thanks Chad for being a great sport, you’re awesome man!

Sunday YouTube Videos

Is it Sunday already? What happened to the weekend? Seems like it should be Saturday again. Since it is Sunday, it is time for another batch of Sunday YouTube Videos from around the intrawebs.  You guys sent in some pretty neat stuff this week all having to do with lighting of course!  The first one is an interview with a “cartoon” lighting designer via extranormal.com.  Basically, if you can write a script, you can make a movie. Who ever put this interview together… HI-LARIOUS! Next, pre-viz, oh what a wonderful tool!  This quick video from Pre-Visualization Studios gives a quote demo of a “simple” concert rig in action. Lat up, boiling down what lighting designers do in a a minute and forty-seven seconds.  I guess it gives a good overview for the general population that wonders how we do it.  It is an eHow.com video!

Excellent finds this week everyone, keep up the great work! Have a great rest of your weekend and rock it out this week!

Sunday YouTube Videos

This weeks Sunday YoutTube Videos are all over the place! The first, well, who doesn’t love bunnies, and the Princess Bride? Combine them and shorten it to 30 seconds and you get Bunnies in 30 Seconds.  Next, in honor of My 1st anniversary and Andrew Griffin, (@afgld), getting married this past week, a to funny first wedding dance.  Do yourself a favor and just ignore the cheap DJ lighting! Last, but not least, The kids from Auto Tune the news have done it again.  The things they accomplish are hilarious!

Everyone have a great rest of your weekend.  Kick some ass this week!

Sunday YouTube Videos

This weeks Sunday YouTube videos are just plan crazy awesome. I saw this first one on CNN’c Viral Video Rewind Roundup… or something like that. It is an amazing “walk” through the states starting off in New York and heading to San Fransisco. Check out the related videos, there is a “how they did it” video too. The second video is from New Years 2010. It is some amazing 3D video projection. Make sure to watch then entire thing, it get even better towards the end. The last and final video is a look back to 1990 and a concert in Paris. Talk about some “high tech” video and lighting for the time! It is pretty cool to think how far we have come in just 20 years.

Have a wonderful rest of your Sunday and have a kick ass week!

Sunday YouTube Videos

There are just to many viral and hilarious video’s on the web. I try an limit the Sunday YouTube Video’s to just three. With all the great video’s out there, I think I have enough to post through August! This weeks video’s are a crazy assortment of videos. The first being, yes a Vimeo video, but who cares, it’s still cool. This had to take some time to do with all the different angles and painting of “creatures”. The second video again is a Vimeo video of a guys pet lizard. And the last video is a re-mark or creation of a Seinfeld movie from clips of the show. With nine years of shows to go through, you can almost make any genre of movie from Seinfeld clips.

Everyone have a great rest of the weekend and TEAR IT UP this week!

Sunday YouTube Videos

This weeks Sunday YouTube Videos are too damn funny. You guys find some of the craziest and funniest videos on the interwebs. How do you do it?!?! Firstw one up, who knew that getting an ice cream cone could be so difficult and hilarious at the same time? Next, you have to love street performers…. Well, subway performers. These guys went ALL out with the costumes! Excellent stuff.
Have a great Sunday and rock out this week.

Vectorworks & Lightwright 5 Webinar Video Now Available

Back on May 18th, I wrote about a Vectorworks Spotlight and Lightwright webinar about how to exchange data between the two applications. The webinar happened back on May 25, yes, over a month away! Since I was at the Broadway Lighting Master Classes in New York, I was not able to get online to watch the webinar so I missed out just like you if you missed it.

Nemetschek, the developers of Vectorworks has just made the webinar avilable on their web site as a quicktime video!  So I guess we didn’t miss out!  Here is a bit of background on the webinar and video.

If you missed the May 25th webinar entitled “Exchanging Data With Vectorworks Spotlight and Lightwright” you can view it here. Lightwright’s author, John McKernon, and Kevin Linzey of Nemetschek put this 35 minute tutorial together. If you are a lighting designer (or lighting student) you will want to watch this webinar. (Note: Please be patient and give this large file time to download, it is worth it!)

What are you waiting for, start downloading it now and get your learn on! Thanks Nemetschek!
