Gobo Who? GoboMan

Do You know Goboman? If not, you should!  I have known about Goboman for sometime now and have yet to try their gobos.  After seeing their gobos in person at USITT and Goboman lowering their price of stock metal gobos from $7.95 to $6.95, they are making it even harder for me NOT to consider buying from them!

Goboman offers over 250 stock metal gobo’s in either B or A size in stock and ready to ship.  They offer a cross reference guide from some of the other leading gobo manufacturers out there. Goboman even offers custom metal gobo’s at $69.95 for each original and $29.95 for duplicates all available within a 48 hour turn around time.

Goboman also offer some of the standard gel colors in sheets and rolls along with Black Foil.  Give Goboman’s online catalog a look and let me know what you think. And yes, Goboman is the place where I picked up a pair of gobo earrings for my wife at USITT for only $10.  If you are interested in a pair of your own, contact Goboman for a listing of Gobo Earring Designs they offer.

A St. Patrick’s Day Mission

HAPPY ST. PATRICK’s DAY everyone!  As we celebrate Ireland’s Patron Saint Patrick tonight. I have a fun little mission for those of us of age.  While partaking in your favorite beverage of choice which just might happen to be green today, take along your favorite gel swatch book. While holding up your beverage toasting to St. Patrick, locate the closes matching gel color from your swatch book and report back.  Why?  I think the correct response would have to be, Why Not?

An added bonus: If you send me a photo of your green tongue, I’ll send you a little something in return! ;) You can email those photos to me at info@isquint.net.  If they are not to “revealing”, I’ll post them here on iSquint.

As you are celebrating tonight, please, PLEASE drink responsibly and designate a driver and be safe. As I have to work later then normal tonight and can not partake in celebrating at my pub of choice, If you are in the Washington, DC area and need a DD, email or Direct Message me (@iSquint) and I will be happy to pick you up and drive you home.

HAPPY ST. PATRICK’S DAY!!!

Wybron Updates iSwatch iPhone App to 1.5

Wybrin iSwatch iPhone App 1.5Right before LDI 2009, I wrote a rumor that Wybron was working on an update to their iSwatch Gel Library iPhone app. Well, the rumor is confirmed with the latest press release from Wybron. One of the most important things to note about the update is the ability to locate local dealers based on your current location to get gels.  As of right now, it is limited to Lee filters, but still a great addition to the App!

Wybron is pleased to announce an update of our popular Gel Swatch Library application for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Along with the addition of hundreds of new filters, Gel Swatch Library 1.5 is the only app in the lighting industry that allows users to access a map of dealers in their area. Geographical information for Lee dealers across the United States can be accessed from the user’s current location or zip code, with users able to call or email those dealers with one touch. Dealers from other parts of the globe, including Canada, will follow.

Features:

• On detail view, there is a button to scroll through CMY, RGB and Notes:
• This allows field to display larger.
• Notes consist of manufacturer notes for the gel (ie. stops, mired shift and usage information).
• Can’t read the whole note? Double tap on it to pop up a window with the complete note.
• Search now includes the notes field in the results.

• Names no longer overlap each other on comparison view.

• In list view, shake the device to go to a random gel in the current swatch book.

• Swatch books are now listed by manufacturer and then product line.

• Added Lee Urban Effect Filters.

• Added Rosco e-colour+ (Only available in Europe).

• Added Rosco cinegel.

• Added Rosco CalColor.

• Added Rosco Storaro Selection.

• Added Rosco cinelux.

The updated application is available for download immediately—as of December 1, 2009. Users who have already purchased iSwatch will find that their libraries will update automatically through the Apple App Store.

iSwatch runs on the iPhone or iPod touch and can be purchased through Apple’s App Store. Just click on the App Store icon from the main screen of each device, or access the App Store through iTunes.

An Industry That Listens: Rosco Strobist Collection

Strobist Collection Beauty ShotWe received an interesting email from Rosco Labs marketing department about a new gel kit that they have put together called The Rosco Strobist Collection. The Rosco Strobist Collection is an assortment of standard gel colors and correction gels that photographers and lighting professionals use on a regular bases.  What is unique about the Rosco Strobist Collection is that the gels are cut to fit in front of standard photography flashes to help correct the flashes color temperature to the light source.

What makes this product stand out is the fact that a photographer, David Hobby, who runs a blog called www.strobist.com wrote an article about how to contact Rosco Labs to obtain a free gel swatch book and yank out the color corrections that a photographer may need in order to correct the color temperature of their flash.  Rosco labs was overwhelmed with request from readers of the strobist.com for free swatch books.  From there, Rosco Labs and David Hobby worked together to create the Strobist Collection of gels.  You can read about how David and Rosco worked together to create the collection at www.strobist.com.

What we find interesting about this product is how an individual found a unique use of a current product and how the manufacture listened to what the community was using it to develop a new product based on the end users requirements.  It just proves that manufacturers listen to what we have to say and how we can work together to make are lives easier.

The Rosco Strobist Collection of gels is a package of 55 different gel colors with varies shades and colors.  With a retail price of only $9.95, the Rosco Strobist Collection is a good investment for photographers.  For more information on the Rosco Strobist Collection or to locate a Rosco dealer near you, visit www.rosco.com.

lee_gel_swatch_bookLee Filters just announced the addition of a new range of gel correction colors to their Arc Correction and Effect filters, the Lee Urban Effect Filters.  Lee has developed a range of gel correction that would turn daylight and/or tungsten lamps to a sodium light effect.  Yes, the same sodium lights that are primairly used for street lamps.

The new colors in the Urban range of gels are thus:

Lee has also developed a  new falight conversion gel that coverts daylight (5600k) to Tungsten (3200k) with a red bias.  The new gel colors is 604 Full CT Eight Five.

And the final gel that Lee is introducing is a new diffusion filter, 439 Heavy Quiet Frost, which is very durable and makes very little noise when used on windy locations for film and video people.  The new Heavy Quite Frost is so durable that it can be sewn, or grommetted together to create a larger sheet for larger frames.

Apollo Design Offers Rebate on Gel

apollo-GelBookIt is that time of year when schools and theatre’s begin to stock up on the things they need during the course of the year.  One thing that we just can not live without in theatre are gels.  Of course with the multitude of gel manufacturers and then of course the shear number of gels offered by each of those manufacturers, stocking up can be hard.  But there are always the “standard” colors that are almost always used.

Apollo Design has stepped up and begun a new gel rebate program during the “stock up” time of year.  With a minimum purchase of 10 sheets or 1 roll of Apollo Gel from authorized U.S. dealers, you can receive $1 per sheet of $15 per roll cash back from Apollo.  The Gel Rebate Promotion ends on September 22, 2009.

To learn more about the Gel Rebate Promotion and to download the mail-in rebate redemption form, visit Apollo Design’s web site at www.apollodesign.net.
