New on the Mac App Store – DMX Assistant

Earlier this month, a new app became available in the Mac App Store, DMX Assistant. Slowly we will start to see more and more lighting software titles become available through the Mac App Store.  The first couple are from start ups and individuals developing Mac programs for us to benefit from.

DMX Assistant is a tool to send and receive DMX via ArtNet, designed to make it really easy to understand what’s happening. You can set DMX values to output to any of the 256 ArtNet universes, separated into ‘Scenes’ (submasters) if you wish. All the ArtNet universes being broadcast around your network are visible in the scene list, so you can inspect what your lighting console or other device is sending, and to HTP merge into a new universe for output.

DMX Assistant had four ways of viewing DMX values:

  • Light-Up Faders
  • Grid View
  • Histogram
  • LED Array View

Other Features:

  • ArtNet Input
  • ArtNet Output
  • HTP Merging
  • Dark Interface

Douglas Heriot is the developer of DMX Assistant.  You can learn more about the Mac App by visiting his website at www.douglasheriot.com. Head over to the Mac App Store on your Mac and learn more about DMX Assistant. You can purchase a copy for $24.99 USD.

Chameleon Lighting Software Releases V1 RC8 with New Features

Back in November, I mentioned a new lighting software title out there for the Mac called Chameleon.  Looks like development of the software is coming along nicely with the release of Version 1.0 RC8.

This release fixes a few bugs, includes the new USB drivers from FTDI (fully compatible with the 10.6.5 release now), and adds a couple of cool new features.

You can now assign user buttons to ‘radio button’ groups so you can make sure only one scene in a group can be on at a time. This is useful for making sure that scenes and looks don’t overlap when they shouldn’t. When you put your mouse over a button, a popup window appears telling you which group it is in, and all other buttons in that group appear outlined in light grey.

For more advanced users, we’ve now added a comprehensive set of keypad command allowing you to patch, re-patch and unpatch channels to addresses. In record mode, just hit the p key and patch away. Once you’ve got the hang of it, it saves a huge amount of time in set up.

Head over to www.maclightingsoftware.com to download and try the software or to update your version.

Elation Releases Lighting Control Software for Mac

elation_mac_softwareWe love any news that is about of favorite operating systems and hardware.  We love it even more when the news includes Macs AND Lighting!

The new Emulation Control Software from Elation Professional is the next generation in software lighting control. It has all of the functional features that lighting professionals are accustomed to working with, says the company, like cue-lists, fixture groups, playbacks and globals but there is one big difference – they can run it on a Mac OS platform from the start. And, they won’t have to spend a king’s ransom for this privilege either.

“In the past lighting professionals had limited choices when it came to lighting control software,” said Eric Loader, director of sales for Elation Professional. “We have been getting requests for years for a MAC OS lighting software from both Pro Lighting users and Musicians who all own MAC computers. Sure they could run their lighting software on a Windows platform by using a third party software and then go through the awkward, time-consuming process of running the application – but this was inefficient. We knew a MAC OS software would be the only way to make these users happy but it also had to be a software that spoke their “pro” language as well…this is led us to develop Emulation.”

Emulation includes more than 1,500 fixture profiles from all major manufactures. Plus, since it provides a seamless, convenient way to work on the Mac platform, Emulation gives lighting professionals the best of both worlds. “It really fills a gap that existed in the controller world,” said Loader. “Lighting professionals no longer have to choose between spending a lot of money, or making due with software that can’t work directly with their Mac computers.”

In addition to being compatible with Mac, the Emulation is available on OS X as well as Windows XP, Vista and Linux platforms. Aside from its Mac capabilities, the Emulation also allows LDs to work on their lightshows from a home PC, iPhone or any mobile device with a modern Internet browser.

The Emulation software is currently available in six languages – English, German, Spanish, French and Dutch. “It has all of the features and capabilities of much more expensive computer lighting control software,” added Loader.
