Barco Announces OVL Series of LED Walls, Brighter & More Efficient

Barco is proud to announce a new line of LED-lit, DLP-based video walls with an improved LED engine. The new OVL range reaches a brightness level that is 20% higher than any competing system, without shortening the projection system’s lifetime. This makes it the most efficient LED video wall available today. The OVL video wall range is offered in 4:3 ratio, with screen sizes up to 80 inch.
Just like Barco’s 16:9 LED video walls, the new OVL series has an advanced heat management system based on liquid cooling technology, which brings the LED temperature down to the optimal level. This results in a significantly longer lifetime of the projection system, amounting to 80,000 hours of continuous operation in eco-mode – or a 35% improvement over competing video walls.

Thanks to liquid cooling, it is possible to boost the OVL’s brightness level up to 20% without shortening the system’s lifetime. This effectively makes the OVL the brightest LED-lit video wall on the market. Conversely, it is possible to prolong the system’s lifetime by lowering the brightness level. This way, Barco proves that liquid cooling is very effective in counteracting LED aging effects.

OVL video walls can save up to 30% power compared to other LED-based systems. Barco achieves this by basing the OVL’s color and brightness adjustment on smart power management, not on optical dimming.

GripLock – Hang With Peace of Mind

One of the neat things that I had a chance to play with at LDI had to be one of the simplest products on display, the rigging hardware from GripLock.  GripLock has been around for some time now but I have only recently been turned on to their products.

Think about this.  When rigging a hanging point, you would need to correctly measure and crimp your cable for you desired height.  There is some guess work and a whole bunch of math involved in that.

GripLock Systems has done away with the guess work. Rig your cable from the ceiling and run your cable down and then use there wide assortment of grippers to quickly and easily set you trim height with almost any type of connection you need.

Here’s how it works:

  • Insert the cable into the plunger and slide the gripper to the desired position. Where it stops it locks®
  • To re-adjust, simply depress the plunger with your fingertip and move the gripper to a new position. Release the plunger to lock.

The 3- or 6-ball gripping mechanism is spring-loaded and allows the gripper to move freely up the cable. It cannot move down unless the plunger is depressed.

While there is any weight at all on the gripper, the plunger cannot be depressed. An optional “safety nut” or “safety cap” can be added to completely lock the mechanism in both directions. The Greater The Weight, The Stronger It Grips.

After stopping by the GripLock booth, walking around the show floor, I noticed that a number of exhibitors had been using the GripLock products to help demonstrate their own products.  Check out GripLock and their entire product line.  There is some neat stuff there!

Side note: While at the GripLock booth, they gave me a couple key chain samples.  I have two to give away.  The first two to email me at info@isquint.net wins.  Just put in the subject line, “I heart GripLock”.

Altman Lighting Shows off New Spectra Strip & UV 30 Spectra LED Fixtures at LDI 2010

Altman Lighting has been a driving force in our industry for years, for like 50+ years!  They have designed and manufactures some of the most innovative products for our industry.  Just a couple short years ago, Altman leaped forward into the 21st century with LED products and haven’t looked back.

LDI 2010 brought one brand spankin new LED product and the final production version of another that some have seen before.  The first was the brand new Spectra Strip, a 600 watt LED strip light. The other is the Blacklight UV 30 Spectra LED fixture.

Take a look at the video of Walt Dowling from Altman Lighting giving a quick overview of both fixtures from the floor of LDI 2010.

Thanks Walt!

Martin Says “Analyze THIS” With New Fixture Beam Analyzer

Take on web camera and Martin’s New Fixture Beam Analyzer and BAM, bench focusing a fixture just got easier….maybe. Here is more from Martin.

Martin Professional’s new Fixture Beam Analyzer (FBA) uses a standard webcam to analyze a lighting fixture’s output on any surface, making lamp adjustments an easier and more accurate procedure for a more uniform field of light.

The FBA consists of software and a set of three dimming filters in various grades that mount directly onto a Logitech Pro 9000 webcam. Light output is measured and a set of detailed photometric data is generated in real time. The data illustrates the level of uniformity of a fixture’s output, allowing users to easily view the effect of luminaire and/or lamp adjustments on the field of light.

Viewing the beam in greater detail on a computer screen allows for more accurate adjustments and eliminates the uncomfortable need to stare directly into the field of light. No more blurred vision and starry eyes after multiple lamp adjustments.

Not only does the FBA make for faster, more accurate lamp adjustments, it ensures a more uniform beam across multiple fixtures. More precise lamp adjustments also allow fixtures to run more efficiently and at maximum output.

The Fixture Beam Analyzer is a great benefit for rental companies who want to keep lighting fixtures performing at 100%, theatres who demand high quality output, or anyone who wants their lighting fixtures to perform like the day they left the factory. It is especially useful when lamp adjustments are needed following a lamp change.

The FBA is easy to use with no previous experience or training required. Any two users will get the same result, guaranteeing consistency in lamp adjustments for greater uniformity across fixtures.

Chauvet Introduced Over a Dozen New Fixtures at LDI 2010

Here is one of the things I regret about LDI this year, not stopping by the Chauvet booth.  With all of the things going on, meetings, sessions and just the shear size of the show floor, I ran out of time to see every single thing on the floor.  You might think three days would be enough, well, it wasn’t for me.

Chauvet, I am so sorry I didn’t get a chance to stop by.  I really wanted to see everything up close and personal.  Here are some of the new things that Chauvet was showing off in their booth this year.

COLORado Series

COLORado series is born from our extensive experience with outdoor events and installations combined with the evolution of technology. They are designed for the harshest environments, and are ready to take on any installation from cruise ships to festival lighting, washing building exteriors to outdoor signage.

COLORado 1 IP features a total of 42 bright and powerful RGBW LEDs and an IP66 rating. COLORado 1-Tri IP encompasses all the COLORado™ 1 IP offers, but uses 14 tri-color LEDs and its smooth color mixing is perfect for front light applications. COLORado Range IP is a true LED powerhouse with a combined total of 180 5W, RGBWA LEDs and two independently adjustable heads covering anything from a cyc, to an entire stage, or a building with just one fixture. COLORado Ridge IP packs a major punch and consists of a single panel with 90 5W, RGBWA LEDs packed in a tough and sturdy frame. COLORado 1 VW Tour has a combination of 42 warm and cool LEDs creating a range of color temperatures from 2,700 K to 7,000 K for applications ranging from high-definition video and television to big-punch white light effects. COLORado Batten 144 Tour offers the same wide spectrum of RGBWA color mixing from the massively successful COLORado Batten 72 Tour, a Parnelli Awards nominee, with twice the LED output—featuring 144 1W RGBWA LEDs. With 10 and 30 degree optics, it offers an even wash of color—over a 10-meter surface—and the unit’s low profile and low heat emission give you the versatility to squeeze it into the tightest spaces for powerful and surprising effects.

COLORdash Series
COLORdash series are small on size, but big on performance. They’re perfect for retail displays, museums, restaurants—the possibilities are nearly endless. Plus, the on-board driver and dipswitches allow plug-and- play applications without the need for programming.
COLORdash Par-Tri uses seven 3W combined tri-color LEDs to create a solid-color output that nearly eliminates multicolored shadows. It comes with a set of barn doors to help control light spill and provide excellent warming for Euro-style truss. COLORdash Batten-Tri not only provides flawless solid colors for uplighting surfaces it’s also highly effective as a striking effect light. The pixel mode personality allows control over each of the eight high-powered, tri-colored LEDs. COLORdash Accent UV can be used as a single blacklight effect and as an effective complement to any RGB or RGBW light source where a little more of the spectrum is needed for better color rendering. COLORdash Accent VW is a rugged variable white fixture creating shades of white from 2,700 K up to 7,000 K with smooth, flicker-free operation.

Q- Series

Q- Series has always stood for quality and value. Now it also stands for groundbreaking LED technology as two new members join the very popular Q-Spot 260 LED and Q-Spot 160 LED to further enhance this game changing series.

Q-Beam 260-LED provides a tight, 6-degree, super-bright beam. Complete with an 8-position color wheel, a 7-position interchangeable rotating gobo wheel, and a 3-facet prism, this light cuts through haze with lightning-fast speed, creating a brilliant shaft of light and defined aerial effects. Q-Wash 360Z LED is a lightweight, LED powered moving yoke wash with a variable zoom (eight to 40 degrees) and RGBW color mixing. It boasts a whopping 91 3W, RGBW LEDs and incredible pan and tilt speed.
WELL, or Wireless Event LED Luminaire, is designed specifically to be a self-contained uplight for any event. Inside each WELL wash light are 12 3W tri-color LEDS, similar to the 14 found in our COLORado 1-TRI Tour, giving it great color mixing without any multi-colored shadows. It’s powered by a 12 volt battery offering up to 12 hours of life to the fixture and fits neatly inside a piece of truss. For control, standard DMX ports are available, as well as a pre-installed Wireless Solution WDMX receiver. Focusing is easily accomplished two different ways; the split LED plane can be precisely angled using the adjustment screws on the outside of the fixture, or for more dramatic adjustments, a ratcheting foot can be extend to tip the fixture several degrees without compromising stability. Also available is a six-slot road case which doubles as a gang charger for all the units.

ArKaos Announces MediaMaster 2.2 with Sexy New Curves

MediaMaster 2.2 now comes with new curved screen technology, it has never been so easy to project video on non-planar surfaces. This new functionality is available as a free upgrade to all user of MediaMaster Pro 2.

MediaMaster is a software solution for professional control of real-time video and effects that has been specifically developed for desk operators and lighting designers.

MediaMaster Pro will turn any powerful computer into a full fledged professional media server capable of running live or programmed HD video shows in sync with music and light.

More than simply supporting curved screen functionality, the new geometry correction also allows you to correct a single projector mounted in those difficult places where standard keystone correction is not effective. It will also harmonise the output from several projectors which cannot be installed at the same distance or angle to a curved screen.

The geometry correction operates by transforming the output visuals of MediaMaster and so works on top of both MediaMaster Simple and Fixture mode. A test pattern is available to help precisely align the real-time video content over non-planar or curved screens. Edge blending can be edited globally, or individually for either side of each projector.

MediaMaster retains all it’s simplicity and user-friendliness, so the operator continues to work in the same way as before. The geometry correction module only acts on the played visuals and is activated with a simple setting in the application preference window. The output resolution is limited only by the video card used and is compatible with, for example, the Radeon™ HD 5870 that offers 6 outputs.

The geometric correction itself is very flexible in relation to the number of control points that can be used and the type of correction required: linear, curved or nurb. The displacement can be coarsely moved with the mouse and finely adjusted, pixel by pixel, with the arrow keys of the keyboard.

MediaMaster 2.2 also offers several other improvements, such as better support for multiple monitors. While still running effortlessly on Windows XP and Mac OS X, MediaMaster 2.2 now makes it possible to work with multiple monitors on operating systems that do not support spanning, such as Windows 7 and Windows Vista.

Several new effects have been added including Old Movie, Iris and Geometric Cylindrical Distortion. Other minor enhancements have been made and are documented in the change logs available in the release notes.

One final piece of good news: all the new, sleek, super-functionality of MediaMaster 2.2 is available at a fraction of the cost of other media servers, making ArKaos MediaMaster the most affordable media server software on the market.

Strong Entertainment Shows of the Neeva LED Profile Fixture

Couple of weeks before LDI, I mentioned something about the latest LED product from Strong Entertainment, the Neeva.  This is one of the things that I was dieing to see at LDI and I was some what impressed.

What is neat about the Neeva is that it is the same size as our beloved tungsten fixture that we use day in and day out, but it uses LEDs.  More specifically, it uses RGBA or RGBW depending on which fixture you decide to go with.

What really floored me about the fixture… the price.  The retail price of the fixture is $895.  895 USD DOLLARS!!!  Talk about a mind trip! Here is the quick video I shot of the Neeva on the show floor.

Thanks Paul!

#LDI2010: Prism Projection RevEAL Profile LED Fixture

It seems like Prism Projection is working them selves to the bone out there in the fly over states.  Just last year the RevEAL Color Wash fixture was announced at LDI.  Then the RevEAL Studio Wash fixture at NAB earlier this year. And now the RevEAL Profile?! Amazing, keep up the great work guys!

Garrett Young, President of Prism Projection is back to tell us a little bit about their latest fixture, the RevEAL Profile LED Fixture.  Take a look at the fixture and let me know what you think.  9,000 lumens is nothing to sneeze at!

Thanks Garrett!

#LDI2010: Novella Smith Shows Off the ETC Selador Pearl LED Fixture

I love Novella Smith.  She has such a love for lighting and color!  It really shows when she is talking about her products, the Selador series of LED products from ETC.  Every time I see Novella, she has a HUGE smile on and can not wait to talk about color.  Her passion behind it really shows when she starts talking about mixing colors and using the Selador fixtures.  She mesmerizes you and gets you just as excited as she goes along.

This year at LDI was just as exciting.  Novella took a couple minutes out of her busy demo schedule to show me the latest Selador fixture, the Pearl.  It is an all white LED fixture with 3200k and 5600k LEDs in the same form factor as the rest of the 11″ Selador fixtures.  I’ll let Novella take it from here as she gives the best demo!

Thanks Novella, I miss you already!
