Wybron is BACK… At least their Scroller Parts Are

wybron_parts

Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, the name Wybron comes back to life in the industry. Though not as the company once was. Instead of offering their well-known and much loved products, Wybron has resurfaced as Wybron Scroller Parts.  For 30+ years, Wybron scrollers were THE color scrollers in the industry. Everyone had one and loved them. The Wybron scrollers were and continue to be popular. Even though the company was closed in 2013, Wybron scrollers are still in constant use. As with any product, sometimes things break. Whether from abuse of just wear-and-tear, parts are needed to bring things back to life.

Founder of Wybron, Keny Whitright has recognized the need and demand for support and replacement parts for his much loved color scrollers and has launched a new company, Wybron Scroller Parts, (www.wybron-scroller-parts.com).

More from the Press Release:
Industry veteran Keny Whitright has announced the formation of Wybron Scroller Parts. Whitright founded and ran Wybron, inventors of the scrolling color changers, from 1980 through 2013. Said Whitright, “Wybron parts continue to be in demand as the high quality Wybron products continue to be specified for projects from the recent Broadway shows, The King and I, On Your Feet, and Honeymoon in Vegas to the spectacular recent upgrades at the Polynesian Cultural Center in Oahu Hawaii.”

Per Whitright, Wybron Scroller Parts will be the trusted supplier of genuine Wybron parts for many of the products that were made until 2013. The online store is organized by product family and model number and includes photo references. Support features include all available product owners manuals and, coming soon, repair tutorials and mounting plate cross reference with additional parts being added weekly.

Review: Wybron Cygnus VN100 LED Fixture

Wybron Cygnus VN100I knew Wybron was launching a new light- some articles can be found herehere, and (of course) here. I remember seeing it at LDI last year, but to my fault I passed it over. I was not prepared for the light that I pulled out of the box that UPS handed me.

Spec wise it’s got it goin’ on. At full on it pulls 105w with 12 RGBW LEDs pumping 2205 lumens. The built in color correction has a beautiful range from 7000k all the way down to 2800k. The optics have a set beam angle of 13° and a field angle 25° and 4 lenses to choose from (narrow, medium and wide floods, plus an elongated lens) to modify the beam. Data connects through 5 pin DMX, is daisy chain-able and RDM compatible.

Four profiles give you a range of usability from 8 and 16 bit color mixing to the option of a white LED or an intensity master. The built in strobe functions are impressive and could very well rival actual strobe fixtures out there. Probably one of the coolest features on this light is the high speed mode which is optimal for HD recording (see below).

The first thing I noticed about the light was its construction. It was a bit bigger than I expected at 10″ long and 6.5″ wide- about the same size as a Source4 PAR with a clamp. The housing is constructed from aluminum and at just over 9 pounds I didn’t feel like it was going to break in my hands like a lot of new LED fixtures I’ve used. The tilt knob was also large and sturdy feeling allowing me to crank down on it without the fear of cross threading. I was very happy to see a dedicated loop for a safety cable attached right to the fixture.

The next thing that caught my eye were the LEDs. All 12 of them. All integrated RGBW units. All very blinding (I may or may not have peaked down the barrel while it was on). The dimming on the fixture has  3000:1 ratio and is comparable to an incandescent light.  The next obvious thing to do is to test the throw of those very blinding LEDs. Since I didn’t really have a stage at my disposal, I used the next best thing: The apartment building across the street.

The distance of the garage to the third floor windows is close to 75 feet, if not more. And it punched. The color and intensity were bright and crisp. After putting the lenses in I was impressed with how little they cut the output and still flooded out the light. Shadows, both multiple and rainbow, were minimal at most.

For the quick and dirty there are a couple of cool stand alone features like 8 recordable scenes and a master / slave configuration.

The only downside for me is it’s rated at IP20 so that means dry indoor locations only. This is a bit of a bummer for me since I do a lot of outdoor work.

What I thought I was going to review was a small fixture meant for display installations. I was mistaken. Big time. I was given a light that I’m sure will give  a lot of conventional wash fixtures a run for their money. From the smooth Dimming of the LEDs all the way to 0 and a strobe that would make any rave the place to be this light packs some serious heat in a small package.

The Cygnus VN100 has an MSRP of $1,547. The Cygnus family also comes in a VN200 and MF200 model at 200 watts and very narrow and medium flood respectively.

Do I really have to give this thing back?

Wybron Hits the Road Again In An All New Rig and Announce Visuality 2011 Tour

Wybron is hitting the road once again this year.  This time, it’s a entirely different truck. Here is more from Wybron about the new Wybron Mobile Light Lab.

The Wybron Mobile Light Lab is a 48-foot pop-out-equipped trailer that features all of Wybron’s most crowd-pleasing products. Wybron President Keny Whitright had it custom-built after proving the popularity of the company’s Mobile Showroom, which traveled the country in a rental trailer from 2009 through 2010.

But he didn’t simply replicate it. Instead, Whitright chose a larger vehicle and tailored it to the feedback collected from visitors to the Mobile Showroom. He also decided to allow visitors to take the helm of their Mobile Light Lab experience.

Upon arriving at a host dealer, visitors will enter the Mobile Light Lab’s reception area. There they’ll be able to view the day’s schedule, which will include educational presentations and refreshments, as well as learn how to get the most out of their experience. As a bonus, those who register will be entered to win an iPod Touch — one of two Wybron will be giving out each month — and complimentary copies of all of Wybron’s iPhone apps.

After registering, it’s “off to the show.” Visitors will enter the main room of the Mobile Light Lab, which is much larger than that of the Mobile Showroom. Inside, six main stations — each featuring one of Wybron’s cutting-edge products like the Cygnus VN200 and Coloram — line the walls. Each station features a fixture representative of one of Wybron’s most popular product families, a flat-screen TV and an iPad. Those who prefer to explore on their own can toy with the fully functional demos and control them with the iPad, which they can also use to change the display of the podium’s TV to a slideshow of product action shots or a video catalog of other product family members. Each podium will contain literature for visitors to take with them.

Those who want a real feel of a product’s performance can participate in a demonstration. Podiums can easily be moved to a spot 25 feet away from a large white screen that fills the Mobile Light Lab from wall to wall and ceiling to floor. Competitors’ products will also be available for side-by-side comparisons.

Look for updates on the Visuality 2011 Tour from Wybron here on iSquint through out the year.

Coming Soon: Cygnus 100w Wash

Cygnus 100W WashThere’s a new Cygnus in town.  Wybron is updating the line with the Cygnus 100W Wash.  If the production schedule holds true, they should be available late this year, but keep your fingers crossed. Here are the preliminary specs:

Just like its big brother the Cygnus 100W has RGBW LED’s with in-lens color mixing.  That means no (or very little) tri-color shadow. The CRI can go as high as 92.  Weighing in at 8lb, its a lightweight for the punch. The Cygnus 100W can be hung on 12in centers.  It also features the same 5-pin DMX/RDM as the rest of the Wybron family. Input power is rated at 105W peak with an output of 2630 lumens.  LED life is rated to 60,000 hours and the units do come with universal power supplies.  The Cygnus line also features a front mounting accessory slot for the addition of beam shaping lenses.

All in all the Cygnus 100W looks to be an excellent sibling to the Cygnus 200W and rounds out the family nicely.

Wybron Releases Gel Swatch Library HD App for iPad

Wybron  is pleased to announce the availability of Gel Swatch Library HD, their first app developed exclusively for the iPad. Gel Swatch Library HD picks up where their popular Gel Swatch app left off, providing a larger, higher-definition platform to choose, compare and organize gel colors for any size project.

Gel Swatch Library HD offers a number of improvements and new features over the original Gel Swatch Library, including a powerful new Projects feature. This allows users to assign gel colors to multiple project folders, create notes for each of those gels, rearrange, add and delete within the folder and then email the entire project as a PDF with color swatches, codes, names and notes intact.

In addition, a color picker now allows users to tap anywhere within HSL color space, with Gel Swatch Library HD producing a list of similar gel colors for the user to browse.

We’ve also expanded our list of Lee dealers to include the entire planet, with location, telephone number, web address and email addresses for Lee filter dealers worldwide.

With these features, plus a more more powerful search, large SED curves in both portrait and landscape views, faster comparison of multiple colors and a lot more, Gel Swatch Library HD will serve as a irreplaceable tool for the industry professional.

Complete list of new features:

  • New HD layout to take advantage of the additional space on the iPad.
  • All 12 similar and all 12 complementary colors are shown simultaneously.
  • Search now has the ability to use filters. Include or exclude manufacturer notes from searches. Choose which manufacturers to include in your search.
  • Projects! Create multiple projects, each with their own project notes. Add gels to a project and then add individual notes for that gel. Rearrange gels to suit the project’s needs. Delete individual gels from a project if you change your mind. Finally, email the entire project including color swatches, names, codes and notes as a PDF file.
  • Large SED curves are now available in both portrait and landscape view. Also, touch anywhere on the graph’s background to move the indicator along the line and see the actual measured data in the legend. If two colors are on the graph at the same time, the delta between the transmission data is automatically calculated and displayed in the legend.
  • A new color picker allows you to dial in a color you like using the HSL color space and then go out and find the nearest similar gels to that color.
  • Dealers for Lee Filters now include all dealers worldwide.
  • When comparing colors, you now stay in the compare mode until you select one of the two colors in the comparison display. This allows for faster comparison of multiple colors.
  • If you were comparing two colors and left the app, the colors are now remembered and brought back up together when you next use the app.
  • Faster startup times compared to the iPhone version.

Wybron’s Gel Swatch Library HD is available now from the Apple app store for $9.99 USD. It is an iPad specific app so it is a separate purchase from the Wybron Gel Swatch Library for the iPhone. To learn more about the iPhone and iPad apps from Wybron, visit their web site at www.wybron.com.
