It May Hurt for a Bit, But Pain is Gain

By: Justin Lang on March 18, 2020

I am not going to bore you with recounting what is happening right now.  You know exactly what is going on.  All we have right now is time. Like many of you, I spend it reading or watching what is going on.  I am right there with the rest of the industry and the world. Shut down with gigs cancelling or being postponed. It is painful to think that No Gig = No Money. Compound that with the fear of what is happening right now… It is understandable to be scared shitless.

Whenever you’re feeling overwhelmed, stop and breath.  Take a moment for yourself and calm yourself down with some meditation, yoga or let your two-year-old loose with a sharpie in the house.  With each of these methods, your attention will turn. One of them might actually give you a nice work out too.

With all of this time on our hands right now, it is easy to fall into depression and to think about the worst. Then compound that with politics, the news, and social media, you can get wrapped up quick and become a nervous wreck. When you start to fall down the rabbit hole…

STOP, go to your happy place.

It would be nice to live this out entirely in our happy place.  But life has to go on. We have to continue. But how? The work is dry, we are stuck at home and the bars are closed.  All very real concerns. But one thing that is still working in our favor, the vastness of the internet.

Now is the time to increase our self-worth.   You may have all of the tools you need for a gig, but the most valuable tool is our mind.  Now is the perfect time to sharpen, hone and expand your that tool.

Starting today, you’ll start to see a bit more of me here.  I want to share the vast amounts of information and training that is being shared across our industry.  There are a number of companies that have taken to the internet to share product information, training and tips to help grow our self-worth.

This may sound old school but put together a list of things you want to learn. It doesn’t have to be related to the industry. Think of something that has interested you, but life and our crazy work schedules kept you from trying. Put it on the list, try it out, understand it, GO FOR IT.

We have the time, let’s take advantage and learn a little so when the work returns, guess who now knows how to apply liquid-wood extender or can understand why people have such hatred for pineapple on pizzas… COME ON.. IT’S STILL PIZZA.

Chin up, the pain may hurt for a bit, but in the end we’ll all come out a bit stronger and smarter.
