Wybron’s Mobile Showroom Hitting Los Angeles Mid March

Just like any good trucker, the Wybron Mobile Showroom keeps rollin’ on!  Wybron has just announced the next leg of the Wybron Mobile Showroom Tour.  The Showroom is scheduled to hit the Los Angeles area the week of March 15.  Here is a little background info on the Mobile Showroom from Wybron.

The Mobile Showroom has become increasingly popular, and presents a survey of Wybron’s stable of products, including the new Cygnus LED Wash Light, in a environment more intimate than a trade show. “The challenge of this industry is to actually get information to the people who will benefit from it,” said Wybron, Inc. CEO Keny Whitright. “A trade show is terrific, sure, but you’re often lacking time to connect with all the folks you would like to.”

Enter the Wybron Mobile Showroom, a custom-built, state-of-the-art enclosure which has become increasingly popular since its inception in October of 2009. The Mobile Showroom presents a survey of Wybron’s stable of products, including the new Cygnus LED Wash Light, in a environment more intimate than a trade show. It provides hands-on demonstration of Wybron offerings and an opportunity for tête-à-tête with lighting professionals, including their local dealers. Most importantly, however, the Mobile Showroom offers education on the general theory behind and mechanics of professional lighting to an audience who may be unfamiliar with either or both.

Here are the specifics on the Los Angeles Tour dates:

  • Monday, March 15 – Meeting Services, Inc.
  • Tuesday, March 16 – PRG Sun Valley Cali
  • Wednesday, March 17 – Angstrom Lighting
  • Thursday, March 18 – Acey Decey Lighting
  • Friday, March 19 – TMB LA

Wybron Updates iSwatch iPhone App to 1.5

Wybrin iSwatch iPhone App 1.5Right before LDI 2009, I wrote a rumor that Wybron was working on an update to their iSwatch Gel Library iPhone app. Well, the rumor is confirmed with the latest press release from Wybron. One of the most important things to note about the update is the ability to locate local dealers based on your current location to get gels.  As of right now, it is limited to Lee filters, but still a great addition to the App!

Wybron is pleased to announce an update of our popular Gel Swatch Library application for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Along with the addition of hundreds of new filters, Gel Swatch Library 1.5 is the only app in the lighting industry that allows users to access a map of dealers in their area. Geographical information for Lee dealers across the United States can be accessed from the user’s current location or zip code, with users able to call or email those dealers with one touch. Dealers from other parts of the globe, including Canada, will follow.

Features:

• On detail view, there is a button to scroll through CMY, RGB and Notes:
• This allows field to display larger.
• Notes consist of manufacturer notes for the gel (ie. stops, mired shift and usage information).
• Can’t read the whole note? Double tap on it to pop up a window with the complete note.
• Search now includes the notes field in the results.

• Names no longer overlap each other on comparison view.

• In list view, shake the device to go to a random gel in the current swatch book.

• Swatch books are now listed by manufacturer and then product line.

• Added Lee Urban Effect Filters.

• Added Rosco e-colour+ (Only available in Europe).

• Added Rosco cinegel.

• Added Rosco CalColor.

• Added Rosco Storaro Selection.

• Added Rosco cinelux.

The updated application is available for download immediately—as of December 1, 2009. Users who have already purchased iSwatch will find that their libraries will update automatically through the Apple App Store.

iSwatch runs on the iPhone or iPod touch and can be purchased through Apple’s App Store. Just click on the App Store icon from the main screen of each device, or access the App Store through iTunes.

First Five Get A Free iPhone/iPod Touch Lighting App

Wybron Gobo AppsA happy surprise for everyone today, turns out I still have a couple of iPhone/iPod touch lighting apps to give out!  I only have 5 codes left and the first five to email me at info@isquint.net get one code to one of the lighting apps from Wybron, the Moiré Gobo Library App or Gel Swatch Library App.

I found out the hard way yesterday, all of these promotional codes are only good for use in the US iTunes App Store.  So if you live outside of the states, I am sorry, the codes will not work for you.

Also, please do not request a particular app, I have already mixed them up and have no idea which one is which.  Makes it more fun that way!

Enjoy your Wednesday and safe travel on this, the day before Turkey day.  Mmmm Pumpkin Pie!

Rumor Mill: Wybron to Update iSwatch iPhone App

wybron_iswatch-app_splash_pageWe have heard through the lighting grape vein that Wybron is working on a new update for their popular iSwatch Gel Picker App for the iPhone. Wybron has been working with some of the gel manufacturers that are currently in the iSwatch app to provide a way for users to locate dealers near them based on the GPS or by triangulating your position. And then displaying local dealers of that gel manufacturer within a certain range of your position.

This is very similar to Zinman Software’s ML Finder Pro App to locate rental locations of a certain type of light.  Where could this new feature be useful in the iSwatch app?  While out of tour or traveling show, you may burn out of a certain color and need to locate a dealer of that gel near your location.  Rather then calling the gel manufacturer or visiting their website to find a dealer near you, open up the iSwatch app, select the gel and map it.  This could save huge amounts of time while trying to load in a show.

We haven’t heard when the update might come around, but sooner the better we think!

UPDATE: Wybron Offically Announces the Cygnus

Wybron Cygnus LEDAfter it’s first showing at the WFX Show in Charlotte two weeks ago and then again on the Mobile Showroom, Wybron has officially announced the Cygnus 200w LED wash fixture. See our video demo of the Wybron Cygnus here along with some close up photos.

More from the Press Release:

As energy concerns rise, it’s no surprise that LEDs have commanded much of the lighting world’s attention. Unfortunately, many of the fixtures flooding the market provide less than stellar light. Technicians and lighting designers are still in pursuit of that holy grail of LEDs: one that can provide incandescent-quality light while still remaining simple, energy efficient and easy to maintain.

“When we were first investigating the properties of commercially available LED wash fixtures,” says Wybron Director of Technologies John Sondericker III, “it became obvious that the current offerings were poor in both the color rendering and the amount of light these fixtures produced. We surveyed some of the new and emerging LED technologies for what would be a generation ahead of the current offerings.”

Wybron is proud to announce that such new technologies have made possible the Wybron Cygnus 200W Wash, an LED luminaire that quite simply is a generation ahead—and one that is worthy of the Wybron brand and its long history of innovation.

Compact, lightweight and self-contained, Cygnus is the first and only fixture on the market to incorporate red, green, blue and white elements housed in a single LED package. This technological adaptation allows color mixing to occur in the lenses, rather that outside the fixture itself, and also eliminates distracting rainbow shadows produced by most LED fixtures. The addition of a white element to the red, green and blue also means that Cygnus produces dazzling, never-before-seen pastels, each mixed within the lens itself.

Alongside the integrated LED elements comes a better-quality white and terrific color-rendering, which, all said, may help elbow the LED fixture out of the world of rock shows and architectural installments and into the world of professional theatre. “We’ve finally achieved output levels and color rendering quality than allow LED fixtures to become something more than a novel wall wash,” says Sondericker.

Cygnus is also bright, astoundingly so for such a small and efficient fixture—up to five times as bright as comparable LED fixtures on the market. This, and its compact size, means more light in less space, and, ultimately, less money spent on better light. In terms of lumens per dollar, no competing fixture even comes close to Cygnus 200W.

The thought put into the design doesn’t stop with optics, however. Cygnus employs advanced dimming algorithms, which eliminate the stepped dimming common with other LED fixtures. In addition, each Cygnus offers flexible operating modes, such as 8- or 16-bit control, numerous strobe controls and color chases. Intelligent color mixing, using RGBW total power scaling, achieves the highest possible output without overloading elements. All of this translates to true, versatile and simple control, allowing you to do the most with Cygnus.

Attractively designed, Cygnus’ housing is custom-cast and extruded from lightweight aluminum with a durable powder-coat finish. A single-arm yoke allows for versatile mounting, whether in a line or array, affixed to a pipe or floor. In addition, its 60,000-hour lifespan and advanced heat management combine with efficiency to make for a truly “green” fixture whose greenness works with, rather than against, its quality of light.

Control is through standard 5-pin XLR for data, and 5-pin XLR connector output for daisy-chaining units. Cygnus is fully RDM-compatible. Each unit has an integrated 100-240VAC 50-60Hz universal power supply, making it possible to have standalone fixtures.

Accessories for Cygnus 200W will initially initially include beam shaping appliances and optional two-armed yokes. Wybron will be showing Cygnus at LDI beginning November 20 in addition to the Wybron Mobile Showroom.

For more information on the Cygnus, visit Wybron’s website at www.wybron.com or visit them in their booth at the LDI Show, 1181.

Review: Wybron’s iPhone App, Moiré Gobo Library

wybron_app_gobo1.png

We bring you a review from one of our good friends and contributing writers here on iSquint, Larry Zoll from Zoll Design. Larry has spent some time using the Wybron’s latest iPhone app the Moiré Gobo Library app and has provided us with a detailed review.

Wybron’s Moiré Gobo Library app for the iPhone provides an extensive catalog of ‘A’ sized gobos from some major manufacturers and gives the user some very useful features. Unfortunately, an interface that is less than slick keeps the app from being a truly stand out addition to the lighting designer’s arsenal of iPhone based tools.

First, let me say that Wybron has done an excellent job of compiling a catalog of 3300 different gobo designs from Gam, Lee, Apollo, Goboland, and InLight.  Having this many designs in one place without having to search through a desk full of catalogs is a great advantage in and of itself. Scrolling through individual manufacturers is as easy as flicking your finger.  You can search the entire catalog of manufacturers but only by name or by number. Moiré does not allow any way to search or browse by category. So if you’re looking specifically for a breakup of a certain type the only real way to find it is to search for breakup and hope that the one you’re looking for has breakup in the title. Having the ability to browse or sort by category would be a huge would be a huge help here

Once you start to browse through individual gobos Moiré gives you a really unique set of features. Not only can you rotate the gobos, and create a Twinspin effect with two gobos you can focus or unfocus your gobo to simulate running your barrel in or out. This, I feel, is Moiré’s biggest advantage. How many times have you ordered a gobo with the intention of blurring it out only to find that it’s not nearly as effective as you’d hoped? All right, hopefully not TOO many times, but it’s happened to all of us at least once. Moiré, gives you the ability to at least get a general idea of what you’ll be looking at once you run that barrel all the way out. They do make a point of saying that “Actual projected patterns should be used to make final design decisions.” But if you’re working on a tight deadline sometimes you need to make a quick decision and Moiré could certainly aid that process. I’d really like to see some indexing ability, but that’s probably an easy enough fix for a future update.

Where Moiré falls flat for me is in its control over gobo focus and rotation. If the control were smoother I think it would eliminate some frustration that occurs when trying to be fairly accurate in focus or rotation speed – the slide bar is, unfortunately, clunky at best.

Overall I think Moiré is a solid app, it has its issues, but I think its usefulness far outweighs its downfalls. At the very least, it’s a great foundation for Wybron to improve on. One decent update could really take this app from good, to invaluable in the field.

Wybron’s Moiré Gobo Library app for the iPhone goes for $9.99 on the iTunes app Store.

Even More Goodness on the Wybron Cygnus LED Wash Fixture

wybron_cygnus-isquint-0137We received word from our Washington contact with more information on the Wybron Cygnus LED Wash fixture.  Not only did we get more info, but some photos and a nice little video.

The Cygnus is expected to begin to ship late in December or first part of January 2010 with an expected retail price of $2,500 USD. As we mentioned earlier, the Cygnus uses 23 Cree LEDs at 5 watts apiece with an 8 degree lens. In the production model of the Cygnus, there will be an additional channel that will control the color temperature of the White LED while adding the necessary color LEDs on the fixture to mix any where from 3400k to 9000k.

We confirmed that the Cygnus does run off a standard 120v power supply and does not require the 4-pin power supply like most of Wybron’s other products.
