Our good friends at 4Wall Lighting and Stage Directions Magazine have an amazing contest aimed at college students. The contest is simple, program some cues, video record it and submit it by February 26th. Of course there are some additional requirements that you can read through below. The winner has their choice of either attending the Hemsley Portfolio Review in New York in April or getting and all expense paid trip to the USITT show in Salt Lake City in March.

Are you a college student majoring in theatre, design, or any other lighting discipline? If so, then this contest is for you! 4Wall & Stage Directions want to see 10 cues from a show you worked on this past season. Submit a video of your cues and you may just win an amazing opportunity to rub shoulders with pros and peers alike at either the Hemsley Portfolio Review or USITT!

You can choose to work solo or team up with someone, one designer and one assistant designer. The show does not have to be real to be elligible for the contest, and you can choose which console and lighting instruments to work with.  The deadline to enter the contest is February 26th, and the winners will be notified shortly after that.  If you have any questions, feel free to send an email to contest@4wall.com. Good luck!

Contest Rules:

– Program 10 playback cues of a real or fictional show on a console of your choice
– Shoot a video going through each playback of your show – Post the video to YouTube
– Submit the video link via email to contest@4wall.com by February 26th
In the email include details of the show such as the console and lighting equipment used
– Two students can participate in a group – One Designer & One Assistant Designer
– Must be a student currently enrolled in a college or theatre program
– Contestant must currently reside within the continental US

Me & My Zero88, Submit a Photo, Win a Desk

Kevin Lee Allen Joins Student Lighting Design Competition Judging

We are happy to announce that Lighting and Set Designer Kevin Lee Allen will be joining the faculty as a judge for the 2012 Student Lighting Design Competition. “I am thrilled to include Mr. Allen to the judging committee of the Student Lighting Design Competition.” says Justin Lang, Editor of iSquint.net. “He is a well respected designer and has superior knowledge and understanding of Vectorworks.” adds Lang.

Kevin Lee Allen is a multiple–award–winning scenic and lighting designer who works in theatre, film, television, museums, and corporate environments; including architainment, exhibits, fashion, and special events. Notable projects include work for Fox News, the United States Government, CNN and CNN International, a virtual interview with Benjamin Franklin and productions of Romeo & Juliet, The Tempest, and the Chase Bank Flagship Signage in Times Square. His design sketches are held in  private collections and in the permanent collection of the Library of Congress.

Mr. Allen has been a Vectorworks user since MiniCAD Version 3 and has been using the program as a 3D modeler since that time. He has taught Vectorworks on the university level and has given Vectorworks lectures and demonstrations at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival Region 2 Festivals.

2nd Annual Student Lighting Design Competition

It’s back! The iSquint.net & Stage Directions Magazine Student Lighting Design Competition (SLDC) is officially underway!  We are proud to welcome back our sponsors, Nemetschek Vectorworks, City Theatrical and Field Template. Starting today, students may begin to download the student version of Vectorworks 2012 and a demo version of Lightwright in order to compete in the SLDC.

The SLDC is a chance for lighting students to learn and understand the same software and design process that the professionals use.  Students that enter the SLDC are judged on their knowledge of lighting design, drafting skills and understanding of the design process. The winner of this second annual competition will receive a prize package including a professional license of Vectorworks® 2012 with Renderworks® software, a personal license of Lightwright™ 5 and a single license of Field Template™ SoftSymbols V3. The winner will also be featured on iSquint.net and Nemetschek Vectorworks’ news site, Planet Vectorworks.

Design entries must be created by a student using Lightwright and Vectorworks software with Renderworks. Full-time students with active and valid college or university IDs can download a free student version of Vectorworks 2012 with Renderworks at student.vectorworks.net. (Students living outside the U.S will be redirected to a local distributor in their country to obtain a student version.) Lightwright also offers a demo version that can be used for producing paperwork for the competition, which can be downloaded at: www.mckernon.com.

Entries will be judged by a panel of industry experts including: lighting designer, writer and editor Justin Lang from iSquint; software engineer and lighting design industry expert Kevin Linzey from Nemetschek Vectorworks; author and lighting designer Steve Shelley of Field Template, developer of Soft Symbols; lighting designer, author and Vectorworks expert Gregg Hillmar; and lighting designer and developer of Lightwright, John McKernon.

Entries are due March 16, 2012, and the winner will be announced at the USITT Conference on March 29.

You’ll be travelling and staying in a dozen or so cities over three months, seeing all the local sights, dropping in on events and hitting up the best that each city has offer in light. You’ll be totally immersed. And you’ll keep the rest of us biting our nails with plenty of videos and pictures of your adventures on the blog.

The Student Design Competition Closes in 10 Days!

Hey students, the design competition closes in just 10 days!  Are you cramming in your design work?  It’s due on April 15th if you want to take part in the competition.  Don’t wait till the last minute, make sure to get it in on time. Just a reminder. ;)

Attention Students – Time is Running Out to Enter the SDC

USITT is long gone.  Sounds like Spring Break is over too.  Before you know it, so will the school year and so will the Student Design Competition!  Have you been working on your design for the competition?  April is right around the corner! I hoe everyone has been working diligently on their design as well as their school work. Time management is key here.  Don’t put things off to the last minute, that is when you start rushing and making mistakes.  Trust me, I have been there!

You still have plenty of time to work on you design and to submit it to the Student Design Competition.  Just remember, the last day to enter the competition is Friday, April 15th, 2011.  While your at it, don’t forget your taxes, they are due the same day!

Apollo Designs 4th Annual Design-A-Pattern Contest Begins

Apolloe Design has announced their 4th annual Design-A-Pattern Contest.  Entries are being accepted now through April 28, 2011.  The winner of the Design-A-Pattern contest will be added to the standard patterns offered by Apollo Design.  The winning design also gets their winning design made into a pattern and a commemorative plaque!

Apollo will be posting all of the qualified entries to their website on May 5, 2011 until June 2, 2011.  During that time, we the public will have a chance to vote on our favorite pattern. The winning patterns will be announced June 30, 2011.

Lightwright Touch Winner Announced

Yesterday I ran a contest for a lucky reader of iSquint to win a copy of Lightwright Touch for the iPad.  I have been playing with the app since I got it and boy do I love it!  I wanted to share the love and bring happiness to one reader.  While I would love to give everyone a copy, I just cannot do, sorry guys!

Is $50 dollars to much to ask for to purchase the app, that is something you have to decide.  If you ask me, I will tell you my standard response.  Is $50 dollars for a tool that could save you money with time and energy while designing and cueing a show? You have to decide.  I personally can see a savings and better work flow.  But the questions is, can you?

The Student Design Competition is Officially OPEN

Yup, it is January 28th.  That means that the student design competition is open!  While the competition just started, I don’t expect many students to start submitting their design work right now.  I highly recommend taking your time, you have almost all of spring semester!  Heck, the competition doesn’t close until April 15th.  That doesn’t mean wait till the last minute either!

Head over to the Student Design Competition page and learn more about the competition and get the low down on the rules and requirements.  There are also plenty of links to get you to the right site to download the FREE student version of Vectorworks and the demo version of Lightwright.

Through out the competition, I’ll be posting updates, resources, tips, tricks, things to help you along your way.  So get your design started and have some fun with it! All of the judges and I are extremely excited to see what you come up with. Break-a-leg everyone!
